Principal's Message

As principal of the School of Science and Engineering Magnet, allow me to welcome you to our website.

Andrew PalaciosScience and Engineering Magnet (SEM) is a college preparatory public high school, which was created in 1982. Our school offers a variety of courses designed to allow students to acquire the necessary skills required to compete globally in the areas of Science and Engineering. We are a school with an exciting and rigorous learning environment for both students and staff. We currently serve 400 students in grades nine through twelve. Applicants are selected from the general Dallas ISD population. Admission to the School of Science and Engineering is based upon a student’s achievements and interest. All SEM students are required to participate in a comprehensive Pre-Advanced Placement and Advanced Placement curriculum.

Our school offers Fast-Track classes in math, science, English and computer science. Therefore, students have the opportunity to progress at their own speed by taking accelerated course work. Science, math and English concepts are integrated throughout SEM’s curriculum in order to demonstrate the interdependence of math, science and engineering technology. The teaching staff at SEM share a common goal of preparing our students for the rigorous demands that today’s colleges of science and engineering place on students. Our faculty includes exceptional teachers with over 75 percent having advanced degrees in the areas they teach.

Our staff remains committed in all that we do to uphold the high standards that have earned the School of Science and Engineering several awards and honors. As a result, the school has been named among the highest-performing high schools in the country according to national publications' rankings (U. S. News & World Report, Newsweek, Washington Post). In 2005 & 2011, the school was named National Blue Ribbon School of Excellence by the United States Department of Education. SEM won the 2012 Intel School of Distinction Award for the Best High School Math Program in the Country!

We appreciate your interest in our school and hope that you enjoy learning more about our program. It is truly an honor to serve as the principal of SEM as we continue to strive to be the best Science and Engineering school in the world.
