Science and Engineering Freshman Shadow Program!

What is “Shadowing” at The School of Science and Engineering (S.E.M.)?

Shadowing is the opportunity for 8th/9th grade students to spend the day at S.E.M. and experience firsthand what it’s like to be a member of the S.E.M. family. Students that shadow are paired with a friendly and knowledgeable S.E.M. student for the day to attend classes, go to lunch and get a true feel for the student life at S.E.M.

How do we sign up?

Call the S.E.M. office at 972 925-5960 between the hours of 9:15 a.m. - 4:30 p.m. Speak with the office clerk, Ms. Martinez or the office manager Linda Perez. Ask to schedule a shadow visit for your child. We schedule these visits Monday - Thursday. We will add your child’s name to our calendar and assign an S.E.M. student to your child for the day.
If you will not be able to keep your shadow appointment, please call the office as soon as possible so that we can provide the slot to another visiting student.

What do I do on the day of shadowing?

The School of Science and Engineering’s main office is located at the Yvonne A. Ewell Townview Magnet Center in Suite 216, on 1201E. 8th Street in Dallas Tx 75202. Park in a visitor’s parking space located in the front of the campus. Once you enter the building, be prepared to present your driver’s license to enter the campus. Tell the security staff your child will shadow with S.E.M. for the day.  Please arrive at the office at 8:30 a.m. An S.E.M. student will be available to greet your child. You may leave once your child is checked in with the front office staff. You may return at 3:45 p.m. to pick up your child from the main office.

What does a student experience during a shadow visit?

Your child will be assigned to an S.E.M. student for the full day. The S.E.M. student will provide a tour of the school. Your child will meet other SEM students and teachers so they can get a feel of what it’s like to be an S.E.M. student. They will attend the S.E.M. student’s classes, and go to lunch (12:30 p.m.-1:05 p.m.). Throughout the day, your child will learn helpful tips from teachers and students on what to expect as a new student at S.E.M. Your child will be provided with an attendance excuse note prior to his/her departure - to turn into his/her middle school.

Is shadowing a full day or half day?

Students shadow for the entire day to fully experience life at S.E.M, however half days may be arranged upon your request.

What dates does the program run through?

The dates for the program in 2017 began October 2, 2017 and will end December 14, 2017. There were no Shadows scheduled during standardized testing days (PSAT, October 11th).  View our calendar to view DISD "no school" days.
